Making your home more sustainable is actively encouraged in the Netherlands. If you improve your ventilation or save energy, you can often get a subsidy or favourable financing. The key scheme for homeowners is the ISDE: the investment subsidy for sustainable energy and energy saving.
ISDE and ventilation
The ISDE focuses on heat pumps, solar water heaters and insulation measures, among others. For ventilation the scheme is especially interesting in combination with other measures: if you insulate, you must ventilate properly, and the government recognises this in its conditions. When replacing an outdated HRV unit with a modern, energy-efficient one, an allowance of several hundred euros is possible in many cases.

VAT, energy label and property value
Beyond direct subsidies there are indirect benefits. A good ventilation system contributes to a better energy label, and a better label demonstrably means a higher property value. For those financing a renovation: many banks offer a lower mortgage rate or extra borrowing capacity for sustainability measures.
Our advice: do not be guided by the subsidy alone. The biggest gain of an HRV system is in comfort, health and lower heating costs, year after year. The subsidy is a nice start; the savings do the rest.
